Marriage License

REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLYING OF A MARRIAGE LICENSE


Hours:

  • Between 8:00am to 3:30pm and both must be present to apply.

Who:

  • Indiana residents must apply in the county in which at least one resides. They can get married anywhere in the state.
  • Out of state residents must apply in the county in which they plan to be married.

Age:

  • 18 Years olds can get married without parent's consent.
  • 17 Years olds must have both parents consents unless one parent has legal custody. The custodial parent must show proof of legal custody. Parents must also show picture I.D.
  • 16 Year olds must petition the court for an order waiving the age limit. They must also have parent's consent

Fee:

  • Indiana Residents: $18.00
  • Residents of any other state: $60.00

Required Documents:

  • Both parties must have Certified Copies of their Birth Certificates.
  • If they cannot provide Birth Certificates, we will accept a valid Drivers License with correct address.

  • If either person has been Divorced he or she must have a certified copy of their last divorce decree.
  • Persons from foreign countries must have both Passports and Visas, as well as the above.

YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO SPEAK, READ AND WRITE ENGLISH. IF NOT, AN APPOINTMENT WILL BE NEEDED SO A TRANSLATOR CAN BE ARRANGED.

THERE IS NO WAITING PERIOD AFTER THE LICENSE IS ISSUED. THE LICENSE IS VALID FOR ONLY 60 DAYS.

WE ACCEPT CASH OR MONEY ORDER, NO PERSONAL CHECKS OR CREDIT CARDS.

Marriage Performed:

    According to IC 31-11-6-1 and IC 33-4-7-4, members of the clergy may perform marriages (including a minister, priest, bishop, rabbi, imam, etc.) Judge, magistrate, clerk or deputy clerk of the Circuit court or a clerk or clerk-treasurer of a city or town.

License Expiration:

    A marriage license expires sixty (60) days after it is issued and is only valid in the State of Indiana.  Your will receive the license the same day that you apply.

Getting a Copy of Your License:

    Certified copies of your license are available in our office for $2.00.  You may obtain a copy by writing to our office.  Please include the maiden name of the bride, the groom's name and the date of the wedding.  Include a check or money order for the correct fee.  Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.  Send your requests to:  Henry Co Clerk, PO Box B, New Castle, IN  47362.
